Erik Sommer (born Minnesota, February 25, 1978) is a contemporary artist living in New York. Best known for his cement paintings,[1] his work is about the passing of time, chance, and beauty,[2] and are often compared to abandoned buildings, eroding stone or forgotten structures.[3] His pieces often feature paint peeling off the canvas, and are recognized for both their subtle aggression and delicate strength.[4] A few of his major art world influences include Robert Ryman, Rudolf Stingel, Andy Goldsworthy and Mark Bradford. Sommer is represented by Rooster Gallery, a contemporary art gallery on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side.[5]

Erik Sommer has been exhibiting art in group and solo shows since 2004.[6] He has been represented by Rooster Gallery since 2010. His first solo exhibition with the gallery, Red Balloon (I Wish I Was A), helped introduce him to an international market, as several of the pieces were sold to overseas collectors.
In the fall of 2011 Sommer participated in RAW, his first international exhibition, at Pertwee, Anderson & Gold, a contemporary art gallery on Bateman Street in London. The show was a success, with Sommer's work very well received.
In January 2012 Sommer was invited by Pertwee, Anderson & Gold to participate in the 24th annual London Art Fair, taking place January 18-22 at the Business Design Centre.
